Namely from Zünd- for igniter and -app for apparatus, which stands for Zünder- und Apparatebau-Gesellshaft m.b.H.. The company is of course better known under the name Zündapp-Werke GmbH. Motorcycles were manufactured in Nuremberg from 1921.
The main task of a wheel bearing is to guide and support the shafts and axles. They absorb the forces generated by the rotary motion and are therefore a safety-relevant component. If a loud metallic rolling noise is noticeable on your Zündapp, this is usually an indication of defective wheel bearings. You should then replace them as soon as possible.
