Damit der Funke wieder überspringt.
Die Zündkerze produziert zur Entzündung des Gemisches einen Funken. Dieser entsteht an einer oder mehreren Masseelektroden, die sich am Gewinde der Zündkerze befinden. Im Inneren steckt das notwendige Gegenstück – die Mittelelektrode. Beide werden durch den weißen Isolator aus Keramik voneinander getrennt. Der Funken muss von der Masse- zur Mittelelektrode überspringen um ausreichend Hitze zur Entzündung entstehen zu lassen.
Mit Stolz kann sich Robert Bosch, Gründer der Bosch AG, als Erfinder der Zündkerze nennen. Die erste Zündkerze entwickelte er bereits 1901. Bereits 1936 eröffnete Bosch das erste Zündkerzenwerk in Bamberg.
