Die Zündkerze produziert zur Entzündung des Gemisches einen Funken. Dieser entsteht an einer oder mehreren Masseelektroden, die sich am Gewinde der Zündkerze befinden. Im Inneren steckt das notwendige Gegenstück – die Mittelelektrode. Beide werden durch den weißen Isolator aus Keramik voneinander getrennt. Der Funken muss von der Masse- zur Mittelelektrode überspringen um ausreichend Hitze zur Entzündung entstehen zu lassen.

Dieses Zündkerze entzündet sehr magere Benzin-Luftgemische zuverlässig, da die Kerze etwas weiter in den Brennraum hineinreicht.
