Dadurch tritt der Funke am äußeren Rand der Mittelelektrode auf, was die Entzündung des Luft-Kraftstoff-Gemisches erleichtert. Zusätzlich wird eine niedrigere Spannung zur Erzeugung des Funkens benötigt. Durch diese beiden Funktionen wird die Zündfähigkeit auch unter extremen Betriebsbedingungen verbessert.
