Die Zündkerze besteht aus einem Metallkern, der in einem keramischen Isolator untergebracht ist. Dieser Metallkern ist wiederum von einem Metallmantel umgeben. Der Metallmantel besteht aus einem Gewinde, das in den Zylinderkopf gedreht wird. Bei dieser Grundkonstruktion der Zündkerze gab es in den letzten 50 Jahren kaum eine Veränderung.

Die technische Grundlage der Zündkerzen mit V-Einkerbung ist einfach, aber sehr effektiv. In der Mittelelektrode befindet sich eine V-Einkerbung. Dadurch tritt der Funke am äußeren Rand der Mittelelektrode auf, was die Entzündung des Luft-Kraftstoff-Gemisches erleichtert. Zusätzlich wird eine niedrigere Spannung zur Erzeugung des Funkens benötigt. Durch diese beiden Funktionen wird die Zündfähigkeit auch unter extremen Betriebsbedingungen verbessert.
