Die Zündkerze produziert zur Entzündung des Gemisches einen Funken. Dieser entsteht an einer oder mehreren Masseelektroden, die sich am Gewinde der Zündkerze befinden. Im Inneren steckt das notwendige Gegenstück – die Mittelelektrode. Beide werden durch den weißen Isolator aus Keramik voneinander getrennt. Der Funken muss von der Masse- zur Mittelelektrode überspringen um ausreichend Hitze zur Entzündung entstehen zu lassen.
1979 wurde die NGK SPARK PLUG Deutschland GmbH in Ratingen gegründet. Die deutsche Tochtergesellschaft wurde 1989 in NGK SPARK PLUG Europe GmbH umbenannt und übernahm die Verantwortung für das europäische Geschäft. Das Edelmetall Iridium ist nicht nur annähernd resistent gegen Funkenerosion, sondern ist auch eines der härtesten Metalle der Welt. So ermöglicht es extrem schmale Mittelelektroden von nur 0,6 mm Durchmesser. Es gelangt mehr Gemisch zum Zündfunken. Eine zuverlässig gleiche Entflammung ist die gewollte Folge.
Ein längerer Funke resp. eine größere Funkenoberfläche sowie die im Gegensatz zu einer herkömmlichen Zündkerze offenliegende Funkenstrecke beeinflussen den Zündvorgang erheblich und können die Verbrennung verbessern.
