Zündkerzen entzünden das vom Vergaser oder der Einspritzanlage aufbereitete Gemisch aus Benzin und Luft in den Zylinder. Das Benzin-Luft-Gemisch erzeugt nach der Zündung einen stetigen Explosionsdruck, der die Grundlage für den Motorantrieb bildet. Jeder Zylinder verfügt über eine eigene Zündkerze. Manche Fahrzeuge haben sogar zwei Zündkerzen je Zylinder.
